About the position

The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is responsible for ensuring the optimal operation of all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center. This role involves maintaining 100% availability of the data center's MEP systems while providing exceptional customer service. The CE manages small-to-medium projects, oversees preventative maintenance, and serves as a technical resource for onsite Engineering Operations Technicians and third-party vendors. The position requires collaboration across various teams to drive innovation and reduce operational costs.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment operates at peak efficiency.
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance and daily corrective work on equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies and provide technical support as needed.
  • Manage small-to-medium projects from conception to completion, including tracking costs and documenting results.
  • Direct, train, and support Engineering Operations Technicians in troubleshooting and operations of equipment.
  • Implement site/equipment-specific training exercises for staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in a data center or critical environment, or 9+ years of technical training/experience, or 2+ years of Amazon experience.
  • 6+ years of experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • 6+ years of advanced understanding of electrical or mechanical systems in data center operations.
  • 1+ year of experience managing diverse teams and other managers.
  • 4+ years of Data Center Engineering experience.
  • 4+ years of experience with root cause analysis and troubleshooting.
  • 3+ years of experience reading and understanding schematics and building drawings.
  • 3+ years of experience sharing knowledge and training peers.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing.
