About the position

The Data Center team at Google is responsible for designing and operating some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC systems in the world. As a Facilities Technician, you will play a crucial role in operating, monitoring, and supporting the physical conditions of our data centers. This position involves a variety of tasks, including the heating and cooling of air and water, managing power supply systems, generators, UPS systems, and electrical distribution and control systems. You will regularly inspect, maintain, and repair various data center systems, including piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components. In this role, you will advocate for best practices and develop creative approaches to reduce operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. Ensuring that environmental and safety standards are consistently met is a key responsibility, and you will be expected to identify problems and make repairs quickly. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you will manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time from failures. The Facilities Technician position requires a proactive approach to maintaining the integrity of the data center's physical infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. The team is diverse, upbeat, and creative, consisting of engineers committed to building and operating powerful data centers. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $81,000-$119,000, plus bonuses, equity, and benefits. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location, and individual pay is influenced by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair various data center systems such as piping and mechanical system components.
  • Provide daily assistance to technicians by reading blueprints/schematics/sequence of operations, conducting tours of systems, and assessing their working order.
  • Manage the uptime and maintenance of water pumps and treatment systems, HVAC, and control and monitoring systems.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in the data center facilities systems and equipment.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and integration of new mechanical equipment and systems into facilities infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or other certified training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of Mechanical/HVAC experience in an industrial or commercial environment.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment under raised floors, and the required use of OSHA standard safety equipment such as limited weight bearing work platforms, ladders, step stools and personal protective equipment (PPE) like safety harnesses.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and work rotations/shifts.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5 years of experience in maintenance of mechanical/cooling distribution systems, construction/technical environments, or a related field.
  • Experience in data centers, hospitals, or power plants.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems used in a data center environment (e.g., Chillers, Air handling units, pumps and CRAC/CRAH units).
  • Knowledge of meters, devices, sensors, and troubleshooting utilizing standard hand tools, digital metering, or calibration/diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on the data center systems.
