About the position

As a Data Center Facilities Technician at Google, you will play a crucial role in the operation, monitoring, and support of physical facilities conditions within our data centers. The Data Center team is responsible for designing and operating some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC systems in the world. Your responsibilities will include the heating and cooling of air and water, managing power supply, generators, UPS systems, and overseeing electrical distribution and control monitoring systems. You will regularly inspect, maintain, and repair various data center systems, including piping and non-critical electrical or mechanical system components. In this position, you will advocate for best practices and develop creative approaches to reduce operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You will ensure that environmental and safety standards are consistently met, identifying problems and making repairs quickly. In emergency situations or abnormal conditions, you will manage data center performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time from failures. Your role is vital in maintaining the uptime and reliability of our data center operations, ensuring that all systems function optimally. The Data Center team is a diverse, upbeat, creative, and team-oriented group of engineers committed to building and operating powerful data centers. You will collaborate with other technicians and engineers to support the startup, commissioning, and integration of new electrical equipment and systems into the facilities infrastructure. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair various data center systems.
  • Provide daily assistance to technicians, read blueprints, schematics/sequence of operations, conduct tours of systems, and assess their working order.
  • Manage the uptime and maintenance of UPS, generators, electrical distribution, and control and monitoring systems.
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in the data center facilities systems and equipment.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and integration of new electrical equipment and systems into facilities infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or other certified training in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in electrical (e.g., electrical testing equipment or electrical distribution) in an industrial or commercial environment.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment, and work on platforms, ladders, and under raised floors.
  • Ability to work non-standard hours and work rotations/shifts.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5 years of experience in maintenance of electrical distribution systems or construction/technical environment, or a related field.
  • Experience in data centers, hospitals, or power plants.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems used in a data center environment (e.g., Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units).
  • Knowledge of meters, devices, sensors, and troubleshooting utilizing standard hand tools, digital metering, or calibration/diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on the data center systems.
