About the position

The Data Center Facilities Technician at Sev1Tech will play a crucial role in supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by managing and participating in the installation, relocation, and removal of electrical and computer equipment within the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) located in College Park, MD. This position is essential for ensuring the technical scope of work is executed effectively, which includes making physical power connections, documenting processes, and energizing all equipment, including the chilled water plant HVAC and electrical infrastructure. The technician will be responsible for the proper operation of critical systems such as Chillers, cooling towers, variable frequency drive systems, Power Distribution Units (PDU's), Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, Generators, and Switchgear. These systems are vital for maintaining mission continuity and ensuring that facility uptime is consistently at 100%. The technician will switch facilities' power supply from primary to backup systems as required, adhering to all applicable standards. In addition to operational responsibilities, the technician will assist government-contracted vendors in maintaining power backup systems, provide weekly tracking of high-visibility tasks, and assist with the installation of racks and other IT equipment in compliance with safety and facilities standards. They will also be responsible for creating, maintaining, and modifying physical plant schematics, coordinating inspections or maintenance of mission-critical systems, and assisting with network and phone cable installations. The technician will work closely with the Building Manager and Government to plan, design, and oversee facility maintenance of water supply, chiller, and electrical systems, ensuring all facility-related maintenance contracts are tracked and renewed in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Support the installation, relocation, and removal of electrical and computer equipment in the NOAA data center.
  • Maintain power and cooling at all sites to ensure 100% facility uptime.
  • Switch facilities power supply from primary to backup systems as required.
  • Assist government contracted vendors in maintaining power backup systems including PDU, UPS, and generators.
  • Provide weekly tracking of high visibility, short-fuse tasks.
  • Assist with the installation of racks and other IT equipment in compliance with safety standards.
  • Provide weekly status updates on facilities equipment and ongoing maintenance items.
  • Create, maintain, and modify physical plant schematics.
  • Coordinate and assist with inspections or maintenance of mission-critical systems.
  • Assist with network and phone cable installations.
  • Track all facility-related maintenance contracts and notify TPO when contracts need renewal.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of experience supporting data center facilities focused on electrical technology.
  • Ability to work independently and execute against a set of requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to resolve issues independently.
  • Certificate or diploma in electrical technology, electronics, or a related field from a technical school or community college.
  • Understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and components.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical issues.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols, including NFPA 70E.
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment used in electrical work.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical blueprints and schematics.
