About the position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an energetic Data Center Facility Manager to serve as a technical resource and leader within Amazon data centers. This position is crucial for ensuring the overall availability and reliability of data center operations, meeting or exceeding defined service levels. The Data Center Facility Manager will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of all electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment within the data center, which supports mission-critical servers that must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This role acts as Amazon's front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting, maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting mission-critical data center facility equipment including electrical support equipment such as stand-by diesel generators, 3 phase electrical systems, UPS units, PDUs, and wet cell batteries. Mechanical equipment responsibilities include CRAC units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, air handlers, pumps, and motors, along with fire suppression systems and building automation systems. In this role, the Data Center Facility Manager will oversee all aspects of the data center's critical physical infrastructure, ensuring that all work performed within the space is done to high quality and without impact to internal or external customers. The manager will lead teams of 24x7 engineering technicians, engage in improvement projects, coordinate with third-party vendors, and manage the operations budget effectively. The position also requires responding to after-hours emergency calls and acting as an escalation point for facilities-related issues, ensuring safety procedures are followed. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the data center's critical physical infrastructure.
  • Manage teams of 24x7 engineering technicians in all facets of their career.
  • Engage in improvement projects, driving them from conception to completion.
  • Coordinate daily with third-party vendors ensuring adherence to contracted SLAs.
  • Effectively manage the operations budget and expenditures.
  • Respond to out-of-hours emergency calls and manage investigations and recovery of issues.
  • Act as an escalation point for facilities-related issues, ensuring safety procedures are followed.
  • Communicate complex technical information to diverse stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
  • Deliver operational excellence while prioritizing team development and well-being.
  • Support multiple locations/sites and provide on-site management for builders.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience working in data centers with an emphasis on electrical/mechanical building and equipment operation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Excellent understanding of electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAC units.
  • Proven track record of people management and developing teams.
  • Ability to solve problems at their root, understanding the broader context.
  • Ability to maintain SLAs through proactive issue detection and reporting.
