About the position

As a Data Center Facility Operations Manager at Amazon Data Services, Inc., you will play a crucial role in overseeing the critical physical infrastructure of our data centers. Your primary responsibility will be to maintain high availability and performance of the data center while ensuring that all work performed within the site meets high-quality standards without impacting internal or external customers. You will be tasked with managing teams of engineering technicians who operate 24/7, prioritizing and assigning tasks, managing projects, and coaching staff on best practices related to service owner issues. Your role will also involve effectively managing the operations budget and expenditures, engaging in improvement projects, and coordinating with third-party vendors to ensure adherence to contracted service level agreements (SLAs). In addition to these responsibilities, you will be the second level escalation point for facilities-related issues and will oversee the operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS systems, and cooling equipment. Safety is paramount in this role, and you will ensure that all safety procedures are adhered to while performing work. You will also be responsible for testing the quality, performance, safety, and reliability of products, equipment, and processes. The position requires physical demands such as walking on uneven terrain, lifting and moving equipment, and performing construction tasks while maintaining balance on ladders. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the data center's critical physical infrastructure.
  • Maintain high availability and performance while ensuring high-quality work without impact to internal/external customers.
  • Manage teams of 24x7 engineering technicians in all facets of their career.
  • Prioritize and assign tasks to data center technicians and operators.
  • Manage projects, coach, and create documentation for staff.
  • Guide, train, and educate staff on best practices related to service owner issues.
  • Effectively manage the operations budget and expenditures.
  • Engage in improvement projects and drive them from conception to completion.
  • Coordinate daily with third-party vendors ensuring adherence to contracted SLAs.
  • Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Respond to out-of-hours emergency calls.
  • Act as the second level escalation point for Data Center facilities related issues/failures.
  • Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to while performing work.
  • Test quality, performance, safety, and reliability of products, equipment, and processes.
  • Walk job sites in uneven terrain and maintain balance while performing construction tasks.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently and participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
  • Perform extended site rounds that could include long distances of walking and long periods away from a desk.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent diploma.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in a data center or other critical environment OR 9+ years of Technical (Military/Trade School) training and/or experience OR 2+ years of Amazon experience.
  • 6+ years of experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and other basic administrative tools.
  • 1+ year experience with managing diverse teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • 6+ years of experience with advanced understanding of electrical or mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations.
  • 1+ year experience with managing diverse teams and other managers.
  • 4+ years of Data Center Engineering Experience.
  • 4+ years of experience with root cause analysis and troubleshooting/problem solving.
  • 3+ years of experience reading and understanding schematics and building drawings.
  • 3+ years of demonstrating the ability to share knowledge and train peers.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Ability to prioritize in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, technical writing or business justifications.
