About the position

As a UPS Battery Team Manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS), you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the management and maintenance of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) battery systems within our data centers. This position is critical to ensuring the reliability and continuous operation of our power systems, which support mission-critical servers and must maintain an uptime of better than 99.999%. You will lead a team of technicians and specialists, responsible for the preventive maintenance, inspection, and replacement of UPS battery systems, ensuring that they operate at optimal performance levels. Your leadership will be essential in developing and implementing maintenance schedules, coordinating battery replacements, and managing inventory levels of spare batteries. In addition to team management, you will be responsible for project management, planning large-scale battery replacement projects, and ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. You will also oversee compliance with safety protocols and industry standards, ensuring that your team is trained and equipped to handle battery systems safely. Your role will involve establishing relationships with vendors, negotiating contracts, and managing the budget for battery maintenance and replacements. You will prepare regular reports on battery system performance and maintenance activities, maintaining accurate documentation of all processes. This position requires a hands-on approach, as you will be expected to participate in physical tasks, including lifting heavy objects and working in various physical conditions. You will work closely with other teams within AWS Infrastructure Services, collaborating to ensure seamless operations and timely resolution of any issues that may arise. Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train, and supervise a team of technicians and specialists responsible for UPS battery maintenance and replacement.
  • Assign tasks, monitor performance, and provide guidance and support to team members.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and ensure adherence to safety protocols and industry standards.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for UPS battery systems.
  • Oversee regular inspections, testing, and monitoring of battery systems to ensure optimal performance and identify potential issues.
  • Coordinate battery replacements and upgrades as needed, ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to operations.
  • Plan and manage large-scale battery replacement projects, ensuring timely completion within budget and quality standards.
  • Coordinate with other teams, such as facilities management, to ensure seamless integration and minimal disruption during battery system upgrades or replacements.
  • Manage the inventory of spare batteries, ensuring adequate stock levels and timely procurement of replacement batteries.
  • Implement inventory tracking systems and maintain accurate records of battery installations, replacements, and warranties.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, codes, and industry standards related to UPS battery systems and their safe handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Develop and implement safety protocols and training programs for team members to mitigate risks associated with battery handling and maintenance.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with battery manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers.
  • Negotiate contracts, evaluate vendor performance, and ensure timely delivery and quality of products and services.
  • Develop and manage the budget for UPS battery maintenance, replacements, and related projects.
  • Prepare and present regular reports on battery system performance, maintenance activities, and project status to stakeholders and management.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including maintenance logs, battery specifications, and warranty information.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent diploma.
  • 2+ years of experience in a management position with 5 or more direct reports.
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in a data center or other mission critical environment with knowledge in UPS, Generators, HVAC, Evaporators and other critical infrastructure OR 7+ years of Technical (Military/Trade School) training and/or experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced electrical or mechanical certifications (Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline).
  • 3+ years of experience in a management position with 5 or more direct reports.
  • 5+ years of experience working in a data center or other mission critical environment with an emphasis on building and equipment operation.
  • An excellent understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations including systems such as feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air handling units, and CRAHU units.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, technical writing or business justifications (white paper experience).
