About the position

The Fiber Technician at Resource Logistics, Inc. is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems. This role involves mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and fiber optic hardware, as well as ensuring proper grounding for all equipment and cables. The Fiber Technician will conduct various tests, including continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables, utilizing tools such as volt-ohmmeters to troubleshoot issues like opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for installing various types of connectors, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. The position also requires the termination of simplex and duplex jumper cords, as well as the termination and breakout of outside plant fiber. The Fiber Technician will calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards and ensure that all paperwork, including timesheets and work orders, is completed accurately and on time. The role may also involve providing onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and traveling to various sites as needed. In terms of testing, the Fiber Technician will utilize an OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO for troubleshooting and identifying problems across the network. The technician will perform both mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable, including building entrance splices and maintenance space splices. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, professional, and capable of promoting the company culture while effectively communicating with customers and team members. Physical requirements include the ability to work at heights, lift up to 50 pounds, and distinguish colors and audible signals.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform testing including continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables.
  • Use volt-ohmmeter to troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on cables.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed.
  • Test using an OTDR, Fluke & EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end and network wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Must have Testing & Troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems experience (OTDR & PMLS).
  • Prefer 3-5 years of experience in Fiber.
  • Prefer Industry Certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI).
  • Prefer Data Center installation experience.
  • Prefer Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience.
  • Prefer OSP / Confined Space Entry experience (splicing).
  • Must be able to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, pliers, and tone sets.

Nice-to-haves

  • Customer service experience (1 year preferred).
