The Data Center HVAC Technician performs mechanical installation, maintenance, and repairs on a variety of HVAC/mechanical equipment in a critical Data Center environment while maintaining 100% uptime and operational reliability. This role requires a strong technical knowledge in HVAC and mechanical systems, particularly in a raised floor data center environment. The technician must possess the skills required to self-perform the repair and maintenance on building infrastructure systems, excluding major OEM tear down maintenance. Familiarity with Building Automated Controls (BACS) such as SCADA, Lighting, Security, and HVAC is essential, along with a willingness to learn about critical equipment like UPS and Stand-by Power systems. The technician will operate, maintain, and repair all types of HVAC and mechanical equipment, including chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and air handlers. They will also be responsible for testing and calibrating electronic HVAC and building environmental controls to ensure proper equipment operation. The role involves monitoring operations, conducting routine assessments of building systems, and managing emergency situations by adhering to established procedures. The technician will continuously seek ways to add value to the customer by identifying areas for improvement that lead to increased reliability and extending equipment life. This position requires strong communication skills to establish and maintain relationships with staff and building tenants, and the ability to support critical operations and emergencies as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all types of HVAC and mechanical equipment (chillers, pumps, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, air handlers, exhaust fans, humidifiers).
  • Perform operator level maintenance of HVAC systems including diesel generator systems, uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), batteries, electrical switchgear, breakers, and protective relays.
  • Test and calibrate electronic HVAC and building environmental controls to ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Monitor operations and conduct routine and ongoing assessment of the building systems and equipment.
  • Manage emergency situations by strictly adhering to established complex utility/electrical/mechanical switching scripts and procedures (i.e. - MOPs, SOPs and Change Management processes).
  • Perform quality inspections on all spaces and systems including roofs and equipment rooms and complete necessary repairs.
  • Continuously look for ways to add value to the customer, identifying areas for improvements that lead to increased reliability, improving the working environment for the customer and extending the equipment life.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner and comply with all Company policies and procedures; adhere to Company standards of business ethics and conduct.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relations with other staff and building tenants and communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Be available to support critical operations, emergencies, special events as well as rotational on-call duties.

Requirements

  • 4-year apprenticeship program and minimum 5-8 years practical experience or related technical training and/or 10-15 years of verifiable experience.
  • Preferred - five or more years of field experience in Critical Facilities and/or Data Center environment.
  • Strong familiarity and working knowledge of all data center types of critical equipment.
  • Strong technical knowledge in HVAC and mechanical systems in a raised floor data center environment.
  • Skills required to self-perform the repair and maintenance on building infrastructure systems, other than major OEM tear down maintenance.
  • Experience with BACS (Building Automated Controls) such as SCADA, Lighting, Security and HVAC required.
  • Familiarization of Digital control systems (fire alarm, card access, CCTV).
  • Experience or willingness to learn equipment in a critical environment (UPS & Stand-by Power systems), environmental regulations, local building codes, fire and safety systems, preventive and predictive maintenance programs required.
  • Familiarization in preparing accessing job hazards and co-developing MOPs for planned work preferred.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Universal EPA/CFC refrigerant certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows-based software.
  • Must have valid state driver's license.
