About the position

The Data Center IT Technician at Ascent, LLC is responsible for the installation, testing, modification, and termination of various types of cabling and equipment within customer data centers. This role involves working with customer equipment, managing work priorities, conducting advanced testing, and performing custom installations. The technician will also troubleshoot issues, maintain detailed records, and manage day-to-day operations of technicians while ensuring adherence to project commitments.

Responsibilities

  • Install, test, modify and terminate fiber/coax/Cat 5/6 within customer data center or applicable telecommunication zones.
  • Perform server installs, drives, switches, routers, ladder racks, cages and cabinets.
  • Conduct advanced testing and install custom ladder racking.
  • Perform custom installations and advanced troubleshooting/advanced fiber terminations.
  • Design and lead cage builds, troubleshoot security systems and customer equipment.
  • Run fiber and coax cross connects and follow proper termination techniques per company established processes and procedures.
  • Perform installs/tests/modifies cross connects and ensure proper dressing of coax, fiber, and twisted pair copper cross connects.
  • Deploy cabinet rack mount PDUs and install cable management systems including wire managers and patch panels.
  • Rack and stack customer equipment and install/test cross connect circuits.
  • Conduct carrier circuit maintenance and troubleshoot switched/multiplexed/media converted circuits.
  • Work with customers to troubleshoot issues and maintain detailed written records of all work activity.
  • Manage and maintain technicians, day-to-day operations, and appropriate project staffing requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1+ years of related work experience with server builds in a production data center environment.
  • One or more certifications preferred: Fluke CCTT Copper, Fluke CCTT Fiber, JDSU BERT Testing, Digital Lightwave Testing, BICSI Level II Copper, BICSI Level II Fiber, FOA - CFOT, Comp-TIA A, Comp TIA Network+.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the day.
  • Strong communication skills and a disciplined approach to managing task assignments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency with basic operations of a PC; proficient in MS Office and Outlook preferred.
  • Knowledge of cable limitations and ability to read installation drawings (Visio drawings/spreadsheets).
  • General knowledge of safe working practices and basic understanding of Unix/Windows booting process and commands.
