About the position

The Data Center Lead Technician is responsible for overseeing the installation, testing, and management of fiber and copper cabling systems within data center and commercial building projects. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of cabling standards, installation practices, and testing techniques, ensuring that all work is executed to the highest standards and in compliance with industry regulations and project specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee the daily activities of the structured cabling team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule.
  • Assign tasks to team members based on their skills and the specific needs of the project.
  • Provide technical guidance on the installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic and copper cabling systems.
  • Conduct and oversee various types of fiber optic testing, including OTDR, Light Source and Power Meter, Visual Fault Locator, and Optical Loss Test Set testing.
  • Conduct copper cabling testing, including Cable Certification Testing, Continuity and Pair Testing, and Insertion Loss and Return Loss Testing.
  • Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that all structured cabling work meets required standards.
  • Track the progress of structured cabling installation and testing, ensuring that all milestones are met.
  • Ensure that all team members adhere to safety protocols and procedures specific to fiber and copper cabling installations.
  • Manage the on-site inventory of cabling materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Act as the on-site point of contact for the Project Manager and other stakeholders, providing updates on progress.
  • Provide training and development opportunities for team members.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in a related field (e.g., Electrical Engineering, IT, Telecommunications, or Construction Management) preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in structured cabling installations, with expertise in both fiber and copper cabling systems.
  • At least 2 years in a supervisory or team lead role.
  • Strong expertise in both fiber optic and copper cabling systems, including installation, termination, testing, and certification.
  • BICSI Technician or Installer certification is highly desirable.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team of technicians.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with team members, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to address and resolve technical challenges on-site.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices specific to fiber and copper cabling installations.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage tasks, resources, and time effectively.
