About the position

The Data Center Operations Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) at Apple is responsible for optimizing and maintaining the mechanical systems crucial for the effective operation of data centers. This role involves supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of HVAC systems and water treatment infrastructure, ensuring optimal efficiency and reliability in critical IT environments. The SME acts as a bridge between technical and operational aspects, collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive solutions for data center cooling functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and implementation of mechanical systems for data centers.
  • Maintain and optimize HVAC systems and water treatment infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular audits and analyze performance data to identify potential issues.
  • Collaborate with engineers, IT professionals, and facility managers to develop cost-effective solutions.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and technologies related to mechanical systems.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent on-the-job training.
  • Practical experience with mechanical systems such as cooling technologies and water treatment equipment.
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 75 lbs and perform physical tasks continuously.
  • Ability to work extended hours in a data center environment with temperature ranges from 60 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Ability to climb and use various types of ladders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of practical field experience in mechanical engineering in a data center or related field.
  • Experience in designing mechanical systems for large-scale high-density data centers.
  • Understanding of water treatment processes and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with CFD simulation tools like ANSYS Fluent or OpenFOAM.
  • Knowledge of software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Trane Trace 3D.
