About the position

The Data Center Operations Technician will play a crucial role in the installation and maintenance of the hardware infrastructure that supports the Barnes & Noble business. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including the installation of server hardware, storage, and network equipment, as well as system cabling and firmware upgrades for both server and networking equipment. The technician will also be tasked with the break/fix of hardware components, which may include power supplies, memory, CPUs, disk controllers, and SFPs. In addition to hardware management, the Data Center Operations Technician must have a solid understanding of the power and cooling systems within the data center. This includes monitoring these systems to ensure they are functioning as expected, escalating issues when they arise, and managing routine maintenance and repair tasks. The role is hands-on and requires strong technical skills, along with excellent informal leadership, interpersonal, and communication abilities. The position is full-time and will require working the second shift from 4 PM to 12 AM ET at the Distribution Center facility in Monroe, NJ. The starting salary for this role ranges from $62,400 to $65,000 annually, depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.

Responsibilities

  • Support & Maintain the Data Center Network, Server, Storage, Power and Cooling systems
  • Installation of Data Center hardware into the rack, including power, data and management connections
  • Upgrade of Server and Network firmware and BIOS as required to keep systems current and up to date
  • Monitor the facility environment to ensure adequate power and cooling
  • Manage the relationship with HVAC and Electrical contractors to ensure maintenance and repair is done to keep the environment healthy and operational
  • Installation of Copper and Fiber ethernet cables, and Fiber Channel cables for SAN environment
  • HW break/fix of all components, and manage third party support vendors for repairs

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in Data Center Operations role
  • Technical degree in Information Technology discipline
  • Experience installing and maintaining data center hardware
  • Experience monitoring data center HVAC and power systems
  • Experience in cabling data center switches and servers
  • Solid foundation in networking concepts
  • Experience with HPE, Standalone, C7000 and Synergy Blades
  • Experience with DELL/EMC, SAN, NAS
  • Experience with networking equipment such as Cisco, PaloAlto, F5, Fortinet
  • Working in a ServiceNow environment is a plus
  • Strong time-management, prioritization, multi-tasking, problem-solving skills
  • Ability to think critically, analytically, and strategically

  • Experience with ServiceNow environment
