About the position

The Data Center Switchgear and Generator Technician position at Central Power Systems & Services is a full-time role focused on the installation, start-up, and commissioning of critical power systems, particularly in the context of backup power generation. This position requires a strong collaboration with the Engineering and Sales teams to ensure the successful implementation and maintenance of power generation equipment, including switchgear, unit substations, and transformers. The technician will be responsible for performing diagnostic and repair procedures on various systems, including PLCs and AC/DC switchgear, and will also conduct scheduled maintenance on electric power generation equipment such as transfer switches and switchgear. In addition to technical responsibilities, the technician will coordinate with partnered service suppliers, particularly engine manufacturers, and work closely with installing electrical contractors to oversee the correction of any issues that arise during commissioning. Familiarity with data centers is preferred, as the role involves learning about structured cabling solutions, network architecture, and maintaining inventory management through Excel spreadsheets. The technician will also be expected to perform any other tasks assigned by the Manager, Engineer, or Sales team, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to learn. Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of critical power systems installation, start-up and commissioning.
  • Available for foreign and domestic travel.
  • Perform diagnostic and repair procedures on all systems including PLCs, AC/DC, and switchgear.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance on electric power generation equipment including transfer switches and switchgear.
  • Coordinate with partnered service suppliers, specifically engine manufacturers.
  • Coordinate with installing electrical contractors.
  • Oversee correction of issues arising from commissioning.
  • Familiarity with data centers preferred.
  • Ability to learn data center structured cabling solutions, Category 6 and pre-terminated fiber optic installations.
  • Ability to learn Data Center network architecture with applicable hardware/electronics.
  • Ability to update and maintain Excel spreadsheets for cross-connect assignments for all cabling infrastructure, as well as inventory management.
  • Familiarities with protective relay functionality and HRG systems.
  • Any other tasks as assigned by Manager, Engineer, or Sales.

Requirements

  • Experience with diesel generators to 2800KW, 13.8kV.
  • Experience with generator paralleling/utility switchgear at 13.8kV level.
  • A high school degree is required; some college or technical school is a plus.
  • Solid understanding of basic generator and electrical distribution principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to initiate, prioritize, and accomplish multiple tasks independently.
  • Work well with others from an eclectic background.
  • Experience and strong proficiencies with Microsoft Office and Adobe.
  • Self-motivated with a willingness and flexibility to operate outside of normal business hours, including consistent travel when necessary.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the field of power generators, compressors, and load banks.
