About the position

The Critical Facilities Data Center Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center's electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. This position is essential for maintaining the highest levels of uptime for our customers while managing operational costs effectively. The technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including the maintenance and repair of critical systems, ensuring that all equipment operates efficiently and safely. The technician will also work closely with contractors and internal teams to ensure that all services are delivered to the highest standards, and that any issues are resolved quickly to minimize downtime. In this role, the technician will develop creative strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Responsibilities will include managing mechanical systems such as chilled water systems and HVAC units, as well as electrical systems including power distribution and backup generators. The technician will also oversee fire life safety systems, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards. Regular inspections and testing of systems will be required to ensure optimal performance, and the technician will be expected to provide feedback on existing processes to improve overall operations. The technician will be expected to work in a fast-paced environment, often under pressure, and must be able to adapt to changing priorities. Strong communication skills are essential, as the technician will need to coordinate with various teams and contractors. The role may require working outside of regular business hours, including nights and weekends, to ensure that all systems are functioning properly and to address any urgent issues that may arise.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and ensure operational integrity of data center electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems.
  • Develop strategies to minimize operational costs and improve efficiency.
  • Manage mechanical systems including chilled water systems and HVAC units.
  • Oversee electrical power distribution from utility/generator to customer load.
  • Ensure compliance with fire life safety systems and relevant codes.
  • Conduct regular inspections and tests of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical orders.
  • Install and align electrical or electronic parts and hardware using hand tools.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain facilities systems, responding to abnormal conditions.
  • Provide feedback to engineering on standards and processes.
  • Work with contractors to ensure quality assurance for system expansions and upgrades.
  • Track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Analyze existing operating conditions and recommend new technologies for efficiency.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate Degree or equivalent education and/or work experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities required.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification during employment.
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire required.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems in a data center environment.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA codes, and compliance issues.
  • Current knowledge in industrial safety best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with large commercial and industrial systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
