About the position

Arthur Grand Technologies is currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Data Center Technician for one of our clients located in Houston, TX. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data center operations, particularly in fiber optics. This position involves a variety of responsibilities including cabling and termination, testing, and splicing of fiber optic cables. The Fiber Technician will be responsible for mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and fiber optic hardware, as well as performing necessary grounding for racks and equipment. The role requires proficiency in both copper and fiber termination skills, and the ability to conduct continuity tests and troubleshoot various cable issues using specialized tools such as volt-ohmmeters and tone sets. In addition to installation and testing, the Fiber Technician will be expected to perform mechanical and fusion splicing on all types of fiber cables. This includes building entrance splices, maintenance space splices, and direct buried splices. The technician must also be able to calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for both multimode and single-mode fiber. Accurate completion of paperwork, including timesheets and work orders, is essential to ensure smooth operations. The position requires a self-motivated individual who can promote the company culture and mission while effectively communicating with clients and team members. The Fiber Technician must possess strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and be able to work in various physical conditions, including heights and confined spaces. The role may also require travel as needed. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and experience with fiber optics, including industry certifications, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, and fiber optic hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable using volt-ohmmeters.
  • Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tubes.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Test using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space splices, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient with tools required for fiber optic installation and testing.
  • Experience in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Testing and troubleshooting experience with MMF and SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics preferred.
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) preferred.
  • Data center installation experience preferred.
  • Mechanical and fusion splice experience preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience (splicing) preferred.
