About the position

The Data Center Technician at the University of Miami is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of equipment within the UHealth Data Centers. This includes overseeing uninterruptible power supply systems, fire suppression systems, and air conditioning units. The role involves coordinating with facilities and vendors, managing inventory, and ensuring optimal performance of data center operations while fostering a culture of safety and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of equipment within UHealth Data Centers.
  • Coordinate management of fire suppression systems and air conditioning units.
  • Manage inventory of all data centers using a central asset management system.
  • Prioritize requests and deploy servers to meet deadlines.
  • Evaluate machine temperature levels for optimal performance and maintain accurate work records.
  • Create concise virtual information reports for management updates.
  • Establish and enhance relationships with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Manage overall ticket management process.
  • Perform power cycles, swap out failed components, and troubleshoot hardware issues.
  • Assist in moving and racking equipment, including cable installations and hardware rack/stack installations.
  • Provide support for deployment of on-site DC physical infrastructure including servers and network devices.
  • Maintain and conduct repairs on the physical structure housing data center equipment.
  • Monitor and evaluate servers contained in the data center and assist with Server OS configuration as needed.
  • Assist with shipping/receiving and inventory management during high work volumes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3 or more years of work experience in an IT environment.
  • Valid driver's license required for travel to data centers and server locations.
  • Knowledge of data center functions including backups, system monitoring, and report generation.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of mainstream operating systems and their respective products.
  • Intermediate network knowledge of protocols and design, interfaces, and devices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with little supervision.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and project management skills.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent problem analysis and problem-solving capabilities.
