About the position

The Data Center Technician - Hardware Planner role at CBRE involves providing on-site support for the maintenance and provision of IT services within a Data Center environment. This position is critical as it serves as the first responder to any issues or concerns related to Data Center systems. The technician will engage in various activities, including conducting fault diagnostics, rectifying hardware failures, and ensuring network channel connectivity. Responsibilities also include the installation, relocation, and decommissioning of DCS IT equipment such as servers, switches, and routers, as well as performing cable installations, hardware upgrades, and replacing failed components. General maintenance and housekeeping of the DCS IT services are also part of the job description. The technician will be responsible for performing hardware installations, including rack and stack setups, and cable installations, which involve routing, terminating, and structured cabling. Troubleshooting and testing are essential components of these tasks, as well as performing hardware decommissions and cable removals. Coordination with facilities staff is necessary to manage DCS IT asset redundant power requirements, ensuring proper load balance and fail-over capacity to prevent cascading failures. The role also includes preparing and coordinating incoming and outgoing shipments, ensuring that packing lists match purchase details for accuracy. In addition to these responsibilities, the technician will provide remote hands support, which includes power cycles, physical environment checks, cabling inspections, and swapping out failed components. They will also be responsible for granting site access to vendors and escorting third parties requiring Data Center access, ensuring compliance with site standards. Daily housekeeping checks of the data halls will be conducted, with findings recorded. The technician will support Service Management processes by creating, updating, approving, and closing associated tickets, while ensuring that Method Statements and Risk Assessments are prepared and adhered to for all tasks undertaken, maintaining safe working practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site support for DCS IT services within the Data Center environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in computer science, Management Information Systems, business management, or a related field.
  • Accredited training in the installation of copper and fiber structured cabling systems preferred.
  • Previous experience using Remedy, DCIM tools, and BMS systems is required.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Basic knowledge of financial terms and principles, including the ability to calculate simple figures such as percentages.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general instructions in standard situations and solve problems in standard situations.
  • Basic analytical skills and ability to learn new technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with fault diagnostic techniques and handheld test equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Understanding of the Data Center environment and applicable working restrictions.
