About the position

The Data Center Technician - Hardware Planner role is a full-time position that provides on-site support for the provision and maintenance of DCS Information Technology (IT) services within the assigned Data Center environment. This position serves as the first responder to investigate any issues or concerns relating to the Data Center systems. The technician will be involved in a variety of activities that typically include conducting fault diagnostics and rectifying hardware failures and network channel connectivity issues. Additionally, the role encompasses the installation, relocation, and decommissioning of DCS IT equipment such as servers, switches, and routers. The technician will also be responsible for cable installation, hardware upgrades, and replacing failed components, along with overall general maintenance and housekeeping of the DCS IT services. In this role, the technician will perform hardware installations, including rack and stack setups, as well as cable installations that involve routing, terminating, and structured cabling. Troubleshooting and testing are also key components of the job, along with hardware decommissions and cable removal. The technician will coordinate DCS IT asset redundant power requirements with appropriate facilities staff to ensure proper load balance and fail-over capacity, thereby avoiding cascading failures. Furthermore, the technician will prepare and coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments, ensuring that packing lists match purchase details for accuracy. The technician will also provide remote hands support, which includes power cycles, physical environment inspections, cabling inspections, swapping out failed components, hardware upgrades, testing of copper and fiber cables, handling storage media, and entering troubleshooting commands. Granting site access to vendors and escorting third parties requiring Data Center access for approved activities is also part of the responsibilities, ensuring compliance with site standards. Daily housekeeping checks of the data halls will be conducted, with findings recorded. The technician will support Service Management and related processes by creating, updating, approving, and closing associated assigned tickets. It is essential that Method Statements and Risk Assessments are prepared and utilized for all tasks undertaken, ensuring safe working practices are always completed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hardware installations (rack / stack) and cable installations (routing, terminating, structured cabling), including troubleshooting and testing.
  • Perform hardware decommissions and cable removal.
  • Coordinate DCS IT asset redundant power requirements with appropriate facilities staff to ensure proper load balance and fail-over capacity to avoid cascading failures.
  • Prepare and coordinate incoming/outgoing shipments, ensuring accurate make, model, and quantities are received and processed.
  • Perform remote hands support including power cycles, physical environment inspections, cabling inspections, and swapping out failed components.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required; associate degree preferred.
  • 2-4 years of experience in computer science, Management Information Systems, business management or a related field.
  • Accredited training in the installation of copper and fiber structured cabling systems preferred.
  • Previous experience of using Remedy, DCIM tools and BMS systems.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor.
  • Ability to effectively present information to an internal department and/or large groups of employees.
  • Requires basic knowledge of financial terms and principles and the ability to calculate simple figures such as percentages.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general instructions in standard situations and solve problems in standard situations.
  • Ability to learn new technologies with an interest in expanding and applying this knowledge as they emerge.
  • A good understanding of fault diagnostic techniques including the use of handheld test equipment.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
  • An understanding of the Data Center environment, and the working restrictions applicable to such environments.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with advanced troubleshooting techniques in a Data Center environment.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and frameworks.
  • Knowledge of network protocols and configurations.
