About the position

The Data Center Technician II plays a crucial role in maintaining the operational integrity, security, and regulatory compliance of the data center. This position requires a foundational understanding of telecommunications and data center operating procedures. The technician will be expected to acquire job skills and familiarize themselves with company policies and procedures to effectively complete routine operational tasks and assignments. This specific opening is for the overnight shift, requiring the ability to work from 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM regularly. As a Tier 2 technician, the individual will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the data center, which includes security functions, adherence to telecommunication standards, customer build-outs, general site response, triage, and customer interaction. It is essential for technicians to quickly identify and resolve data center issues, ensure contractors deliver quality services, and meet internal customer demands. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of security operations, first responder duties, fire watch, troubleshooting, and basic telecom best practices, alongside knowledge of data center architecture and installation methods for copper and fiber. The technician will gain hands-on experience with various mechanical, electrical, telecom, and security equipment within the data center. Responsibilities will encompass customer infrastructure build-outs, cable termination and testing, maintenance work, and monitoring of mechanical, electrical, fire protection, telecom, and security systems. This includes working with transformers, PLCs, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, and various other critical systems. The technician will also manage building service requests, perform work orders, and ensure compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operational integrity, security, and regulatory compliance of the data center.
  • Perform day-to-day operations including security functions and customer interactions.
  • Manage building service requests through resolution.
  • Complete work orders and customer service tickets in a timely manner.
  • Conduct infrastructure projects including cage and cabinet build-outs, overhead installations, and rack and stack.
  • Navigate and utilize a CMMS system for tracking and management.
  • Provide physical security within the CoreSite premises.
  • Maintain and complete regular facility and security tours, documenting and responding to found issues.
  • Monitor and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems including mechanical, electrical, and security systems.
  • Assist with managing systems to avoid unplanned customer-impacting outages.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of experience in facilities or telecom industry.
  • Basic knowledge of telecommunications and data center operating procedures.
  • Familiarity with CCTV and access control security systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal staff.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and address issues in a Mission Critical 24x7 environment.
  • Ability to write concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to operate hand and machine tools and electrical tools such as a multi-meter.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as an installer in a mission-critical facility is a plus.
  • Completion of CoreSite's Data Center Operations Qualification Program within the first nine months of employment.
