About the position

The Data Center Technician II position at Evocative in Secaucus, NJ is a full-time role that requires a candidate with a strong foundation in IT and data center operations. The ideal candidate will have a desire to grow their skills and responsibilities over time, demonstrating a keen interest in computers and IT. This position necessitates 2-3 years of specific experience in relevant job tasks, particularly in deploying and maintaining servers and supporting infrastructure in a fast-paced environment with rapidly shifting priorities. The technician will be responsible for providing customer support through an email and ticketing system, addressing questions, and troubleshooting problems. Previous technical support experience is essential for this role. The position requires the technician to work on-site and may involve working weekdays, weekends, and shifts that include 2nd, 3rd, and mixed schedules. The role also requires occasional overtime, especially during the initial two weeks of training, which will take place during the first shift from 9 am to 5 pm. The technician will perform essential job functions that include physical activities such as walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting heavy equipment up to 50 pounds. The technician will also be responsible for fixing and installing sophisticated circuits, reading installation plans, and ensuring accurate cable management of various types of connections. The role demands excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy and maintain servers and supporting infrastructure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide customer support via an email/ticketing system to answer questions and troubleshoot problems.
  • Fix and install sophisticated circuits and perform custom installations.
  • Rack and stack customer equipment according to installation plans.
  • Install circuits requiring sophisticated fiber terminations.
  • Resolve work priorities from a ticketing queue and ensure consistency in contribution times.
  • Troubleshoot switched/multiplexed/media converted circuits and escalate issues to the networking group as needed.
  • Work with customers to troubleshoot issues and provide solutions.
  • Install, test, and modify cross-connects per SOPs and ensure accurate cable management.
  • Maintain detailed written records of all work activity.
  • Design and lead cage/infrastructure modification projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-3 years of experience in data center operations or a related IT role.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of server hardware, storage systems, and network equipment from major vendors.
  • Understanding of data center environmental systems and industry best practices.
  • Understanding of structured cabling design, installation, testing, and best practices.
