About the position

The Data Center Technician at Vminds Technologies Inc. is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within a data center environment. This full-time, contract position requires a high level of technical expertise and hands-on experience in cabling, termination, and splicing of fiber optics. The technician will be involved in mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and hardware, as well as performing essential grounding for equipment and cables as required. The role demands proficiency in testing procedures, including continuity tests and troubleshooting using volt-ohmmeters, as well as the ability to identify and rectify issues such as opens, shorts, and transposed pairs in cabling systems. In addition to installation and testing, the technician will be responsible for terminating various types of fiber connectors, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. The technician will also be tasked with calculating end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards and ensuring that all paperwork, such as timesheets and work orders, is completed accurately and on time. The position requires the technician to provide onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and may involve travel to various sites as needed. The role also includes performing mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable, as well as troubleshooting and testing using OTDR and other specialized equipment. The technician must be self-motivated, professional, and capable of promoting the company culture while effectively communicating with customers and team members. Physical demands include the ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and work in confined spaces, making physical fitness and safety awareness essential components of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform testing including continuity tests and troubleshooting using volt-ohmmeters.
  • Install various types of fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP).
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of the on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed for installation and maintenance.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting MMF and SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • 3-5 years of experience in Fiber (preferred).
  • Industry Certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI) preferred.
  • Data Center installation experience preferred.
  • Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience preferred.
  • Ability to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, pliers, and cable strippers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in Data Center installation (7 years preferred).
  • Experience in confined space entry and OSP (7 years preferred).
  • Experience in installation of racks, patch panels, and fiber optics (6 years preferred).
  • Experience in grounding installation for racks and cables (6 years preferred).
  • Experience in troubleshooting with volt-ohmmeter (6 years preferred).
  • Experience in termination of various fiber connectors (LC, SC, ST, etc.) (8 years preferred).
  • Experience in OTDR testing and troubleshooting (8 years preferred).
