About the position

The Data Center Technician L1 at NTT DATA plays a crucial role in ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center's electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. This position requires a working level of data center knowledge and involves maintaining processes that maximize customer uptime in a cost-effective manner. The technician is responsible for identifying and quickly repairing data center problems, ensuring that contractors deliver quality services, and meeting internal customer demands. In this role, the technician will handle various responsibilities, including mechanical tasks related to chilled water systems and HVAC systems, electrical duties involving power distribution from utility and generator switchgear through UPS systems, and fire life safety responsibilities concerning sprinkler systems and detection devices. The technician will also be expected to test the performance of electromechanical assemblies, read blueprints and schematics, inspect parts for defects, and install electrical or electronic components using hand tools. The technician will operate, monitor, and maintain facilities systems, ensuring best practices for both internal and external customers. They will provide feedback to engineering teams on existing standards and processes, work with contractors to ensure quality assurance for system expansions and upgrades, and track maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems. The technician must ensure that the data center operates at maximum efficiency, analyze existing conditions, recommend new technologies, and manage systems to avoid unplanned customer-impacting events. Regular attendance and the ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities are essential for satisfactory performance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop creative approaches to minimize operational costs and improve efficiency.
  • Maintain and operate chilled water systems, HVAC systems, and fire life safety systems.
  • Test performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, and technical orders to determine processes.
  • Inspect parts for surface defects and install electrical or electronic components using hand tools.
  • Align, fit, or assemble component parts using hand or power tools.
  • Monitor and respond to abnormal conditions in facilities systems including mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety.
  • Analyze systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers.
  • Provide feedback to engineering on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Work with contractors to review quality assurance for system expansions and upgrades.
  • Track and complete preventive and predictive maintenance programs with the CF Ops Lead Technician.
  • Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency and recommend new technologies.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned customer-impacting events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities (preferably a data center, hospital, semiconductor, or power plant).
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certified during employment.
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one after hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues regarding fire life safety.
  • Current knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e., lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
  • Familiarity with data trending/tracking and analysis.
  • Ability to process Hands and Eye requests as required.
