About the position

The Data Center Technician L1 at NTT DATA is a pivotal role that ensures the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center's electrical, mechanical, and fire life safety systems. This position requires a working level of data center knowledge and is responsible for maintaining processes that maximize customer uptime in a cost-effective manner. The technician will be tasked with identifying and repairing data center problems swiftly, ensuring that contractors deliver quality services, and meeting internal customer demands effectively. In this role, the technician will develop creative approaches to minimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and implement new strategies. Responsibilities will encompass mechanical systems, including chilled water systems and HVAC units, as well as electrical systems, which involve critical power distribution from utility sources through UPS systems to customer loads. Fire life safety responsibilities will include managing wet and preaction sprinkler systems and their associated detection devices. The technician will also be responsible for testing the performance of electromechanical assemblies, reading blueprints and schematics, inspecting parts for defects, and installing electrical or electronic components using hand tools. The role requires operating, monitoring, and maintaining facilities systems, analyzing systems for best practices, and providing feedback to engineering teams on existing standards and processes. Additionally, the technician will work closely with contractors and consultants to ensure quality assurance for system expansions and upgrades, and will collaborate with the CF Ops Lead Technician to track and complete a preventive and predictive maintenance program. Overall, the technician will ensure that the data center operates at maximum efficiency, recommending new technologies and improving overall operational conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop creative approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum and improve efficiency.
  • Manage mechanical responsibilities including chilled water systems and HVAC systems.
  • Oversee electrical responsibilities including power distribution from utility to customer load.
  • Handle fire life safety responsibilities including sprinkler systems and detection devices.
  • Test performance of electromechanical assemblies and electronic voltmeters.
  • Read blueprints, schematics, and technical orders to determine processes.
  • Inspect parts for surface defects and install electrical or electronic parts using hand tools.
  • Align, fit, or assemble component parts using hand or power tools.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain facilities systems, responding to abnormal conditions.
  • Analyze systems to ensure best practices for internal and external customers.
  • Provide feedback to engineering on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes.
  • Work with contractors to review quality assurance for system expansions and upgrades.
  • Collaborate with CF Ops Lead Technician to track and complete maintenance programs.
  • Ensure data center operates at maximum efficiency and recommend new technologies.
  • Manage systems to avoid unplanned customer-impacting events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a mechanical/electrical position within critical facilities.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certified during employment.
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after hire.
  • Understanding of mechanical, electrical, and fire life safety systems in a data center environment.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA codes, and compliance issues related to fire life safety.
  • Current knowledge in industrial safety best practices.
  • Familiarity with data trending and analysis using PC-based monitoring systems.
  • Hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting large commercial systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise contractors performing maintenance work.
  • Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they arise.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with large centrifugal chillers and cooling towers.
  • Knowledge of BMS and PLC controls.
  • Experience with emergency standby diesel generator systems.
  • Familiarity with water treatment systems and VFDs.
