About the position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is seeking a dedicated Data Center Technician to join our team on the night shift, covering 24/7 data center operations. This role is crucial in helping us build and operate our suite at significant scale, where coordinated cloud services are broadly distributed in a multi-tenant cloud environment. As a Data Center Technician, you will be responsible for hardware installation and configuration of enterprise servers and cabling infrastructure, ensuring that all systems are operational and efficiently managed. In this position, you will handle hardware break/fix replacements of field-replaceable units (FRUs) and assist in rack installations, which includes placing racks, cabling, powering up, and handing off servers to internal provisioning teams. You will also troubleshoot and resolve Telco connectivity issues and replace network switch equipment as necessary. Communication is key in this role, as you will be working within a ticketing environment supervised by multiple internal Oracle Cloud service owners and teams. Documentation of activities and building or modifying standard operating procedures (SOPs) will also be part of your responsibilities. You should be able to execute small projects independently while collaborating with your manager on larger local projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in learning new data center concepts and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position requires a shift schedule of four days a week, with 10-hour shifts that include weekends and holidays. A minimum of three years of experience working in an IT environment is required, along with experience in solving problems related to servers, networking devices, and IT equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Hardware installation and configuration of enterprise servers and cabling infrastructure.
  • Perform hardware break/fix replacement of field-replaceable units (FRUs).
  • Install racks, including placing racks, cabling, powering up, and handing off servers to internal provisioning teams.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Telco connectivity issues.
  • Replace network switch equipment as needed.
  • Communicate within a ticketing environment supervised by multiple internal Oracle Cloud service owners and teams.
  • Document activities and build/modify standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct structured cabling, labeling, and troubleshooting of fiber/copper/telecom cables.
  • Install, fix, and repair system power supplies and cabling.
  • Execute small projects independently and assist in planning larger local projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of server/storage/network hardware.
  • Strong interest in learning new data center concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • 3 years working in an IT environment.
  • Experience solving problems on servers, networking devices, and IT equipment.
  • Inventory management experience, including ordering, receiving, and shipping server parts.
  • Experience taking on-call shifts and responding to critical events as needed.
  • Experience raising issues to senior onsite staff and management as needed.
  • Knowledge of IT hardware concepts (RAID, SAN, SCIS, Linux/Unix, GRUB).
  • Knowledge of trunk infrastructure is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2-year or 4-year degree or 3 years of experience in a related field.
  • 1 year experience in structured cabling (copper/fiber), testing of cables, cooling, and electrical systems concepts inside the data center.
