About the position

The Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of fiber optic systems, including mounting racks, patch panels, and various connectors. This role involves performing tests on cables, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The technician will also handle documentation related to their work and may be required to travel for job assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cables as required.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables.
  • Use volt-ohmmeter for testing and troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on cables.
  • Install various types of connectors including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tubes.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience with fiber optic installation and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in using testing equipment such as volt-ohmmeter and tone set.
  • Knowledge of TIA/EIA standards for fiber optics.
  • Ability to troubleshoot cable issues effectively.
  • Experience with various fiber optic connectors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Ohmmeter.
