About the position

The Data Center Technician position is an immediate contract opportunity with a duration of over six months, located in Los Lunas, NM. This role is essential for maintaining and enhancing the infrastructure of data centers, focusing on fiber optic installations and troubleshooting. The technician will be responsible for mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and various fiber optic hardware, ensuring that all installations meet the required standards for safety and performance. The role requires a hands-on approach to testing and troubleshooting fiber optic systems, including performing continuity tests and using specialized equipment such as volt-ohmmeters and OTDRs to identify and rectify issues in the network. In addition to installation and testing, the Data Center Technician will be tasked with terminating various types of fiber connectors, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. The technician will also be responsible for calculating end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards, ensuring that all work is documented accurately and completed on time. This position requires the ability to provide onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and may involve travel to various sites as needed. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, professional, and capable of promoting the company culture and mission. They must possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to communicate effectively with customers and team members. Physical demands include the ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and work in confined spaces. A high school diploma or GED is required, along with proficiency in terminating fiber optic systems and experience with testing and troubleshooting techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform testing including continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Use volt-ohmmeter to troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Install various types of fiber connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed.
  • Test using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end and network wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure).
  • Experience with Testing & Troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • Self-motivated and positive in approach.
  • Proven problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and give oral presentations.
  • Ability to work at heights, off a ladder, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear audible signals.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3-5 years of experience in Fiber.
  • Industry Certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI).
  • Data Center installation experience.
  • Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience (splicing).
