About the position

The Data Center Technician role involves the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within a data center environment. The technician will be responsible for cabling, termination, and troubleshooting of fiber optic connections, ensuring compliance with industry standards. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work independently while promoting the company's culture and mission.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks and equipment.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables using volt-ohmmeter; troubleshoot issues such as opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords, as well as indoor and outdoor fiber.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for fiber.
  • Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of the on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed for installation and maintenance tasks.
  • Test fiber optic systems using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO equipment.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient in terminating all connector types and methods for single-mode and multi-mode fiber systems.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting multi-mode and single-mode fiber systems using OTDR and PMLS.
  • 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics preferred.
  • Industry certifications such as Corning, FOA, or BICSI preferred.
  • Experience in data center installations preferred.
  • Mechanical and fusion splice experience preferred.
  • Experience with OSP and confined space entry preferred.
  • Ability to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, pliers, and cable strippers.
