About the position

The Data Center Technician will support both the Physical and Virtual Infrastructure of the organization and its facilities. This role is crucial in driving data center best practices and adhering to industry standards in working processes and procedures. The technician will be responsible for a variety of tasks that ensure the smooth operation of the data center, including hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The technician will also be involved in asset management, documentation, and compliance with security protocols. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient working environment. In addition to technical skills, the Data Center Technician must possess strong communication skills to effectively liaise with customers and team members. The role involves completing scheduled data center Moves/Adds/Changes (MACs), which includes hardware installation, device labeling, and ensuring proper power and network connectivity. The technician will also provide smart-hands assistance for multiple customers at various sites, adhering to specified service level agreements (SLAs). Daily responsibilities include maintaining site security, logging media storage devices, and conducting physical inspections of the data center to ensure optimal performance and safety. The technician will be expected to coordinate equipment receiving, shipping, and return merchandise authorization (RMA) processing, as well as provide vendor and security escorts as needed. Regular cleaning of the data center environment and adherence to emergency operating procedures are also part of the job. The technician will report on data center service availability, performance, and capacity utilization, ensuring that all operations align with the company's standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Directly support and complete all scheduled data center MACs (Moves/Adds/Changes)
  • Perform hardware installation MACs, including device labeling, power connectivity, and network cable connectivity
  • Complete hardware support work orders involving hardware and cabling MACs, certification, troubleshooting, and break-fix
  • Manage asset management, auditing, and daily work log/ticket tracking
  • Provide smart-hands assistance for multiple customers at various sites within specified SLA response times
  • Maintain a safe and secure operating environment within the data center and report any violations to the immediate supervisor
  • Document and keep thorough records of all activities and processes
  • Maintain site security protocols, badging requirements, and data protection procedures
  • Ensure all media storage devices are properly logged, secured, and documented
  • Possess strong working knowledge of server and network hardware/components, copper and fiber infrastructure installation and testing
  • Coordinate equipment/material receiving, shipping, and RMA processing support as required
  • Provide vendor and security escorts as needed
  • Conduct general cleaning on raised floor, cabinet/rack exterior surfaces, work benches, and other areas regularly
  • Support standard and emergency operating procedures for the data center
  • Provide status reporting regarding Data Center service availability, performance, and capacity utilization
  • Conduct daily error log reporting and physical DC inspections for general health, power, cooling, hazards, etc.

Requirements

  • 2+ years working in data centers, operations, or related technical field
  • General knowledge of server/network equipment and software support configurations
  • Basic understanding of AC/DC power principles and data center power distribution
  • Strong aptitude for independent working environment and high productivity rate
  • Proven problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and give oral presentations
  • Must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder, and in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds
  • Excellent communication and customer relationship skills
  • Must possess at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency

Nice-to-haves

  • Any server, OS, Network or data center certifications are a plus
