About the position

The Data Center Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within a data center environment. This role involves working with various types of fiber connectors, performing splicing, and ensuring the integrity of the network through thorough testing and troubleshooting. The technician will also be required to complete documentation accurately and provide on-site support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks and equipment.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables using volt-ohmmeter and troubleshoot issues such as opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs.
  • Install various types of fiber connectors including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords, as well as indoor and outdoor fiber.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for fiber.
  • Complete all required paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide on-site support after business hours as part of the on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed for installations and maintenance.
  • Test fiber systems using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO equipment and troubleshoot network-wide issues.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient in terminating all connector types and methods for single-mode and multi-mode fiber systems.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting multi-mode and single-mode fiber systems using OTDR and PMLS.
  • 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics preferred.
  • Industry certifications such as Corning, FOA, or BICSI preferred.
  • Experience in data center installations preferred.
  • Mechanical and fusion splice experience preferred.
  • OSP/Confined Space Entry experience preferred.
  • Ability to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, pliers, and cable strippers.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3-5 years of experience in Fiber optics.
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI).
  • Data Center installation experience.
  • Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience.
