About the position

The Data Center Technician at Pilot is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the data center infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance and connectivity for the company's fiber-optic internet services. This role involves routine work at data centers, field locations, and the company's warehouse, with a focus on documentation, collaboration with engineering teams, and adherence to best practices in data center operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine work at data centers and occasional work at field locations and Pilot's warehouse.
  • Audit and document data related to Pilot's data center infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and connectivity issues in collaboration with Network Engineering and Support teams.
  • Respond to requests for connecting, disconnecting, and troubleshooting circuits from internal teams.
  • Liaise with data center operators for routine requests such as cross connects and access requests.
  • Maintain standards and best practices for Pilot's data center infrastructure.
  • Monitor facilities systems and respond to alarms, resolving issues with facility staff or contractors.
  • Maintain inventory for cabling, optics, and network equipment.
  • Order, rack, and cable new equipment as required.
  • Support Network, Construction, and Project Engineering teams with maintenance projects.
  • Provide technical answers and resources regarding current data center capacity and supported services.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Customer-centric approach with awareness of customer impact and risk mitigation.
  • Positive attitude and interest in quick deployment and resolution.
  • Experience in documenting data center cabling and network infrastructure, preferably with Nautobot or Netbox.
  • Successful cross-functional collaboration skills with timely task execution.
  • Experience in data center operations and understanding of fiber and copper cable methodology.
  • Experience with crimping, labeling, and using patch panels and fiber optic connectors.
  • Basic knowledge of optical module types and fiber cabling parameters.
  • Basic knowledge of optical technologies like PON and WDM.
  • Experience with AC and DC power systems in data center environments.
  • Ability to execute tasks independently and on time.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with after-hours on-call rotation and off-hours work availability.
  • Comfort with daily travel via mass transit in the NYC metro area.
  • Valid, clean driver's license.
