About the position

The Data Center Technician role involves specialized skills in fiber optic cabling, splicing, and testing. The technician will be responsible for the installation and troubleshooting of fiber systems, ensuring high-quality performance and adherence to industry standards. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to improving project outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform copper and fiber optic terminations and installations, including racks, patch panels, and grounding.
  • Conduct continuity tests for horizontal and riser cables; troubleshoot issues such as opens, shorts, and crossed pairs.
  • Install various connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP) for both multi-mode and single-mode fibers.
  • Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords, as well as outdoor and indoor fiber.
  • Install fan-out kits and calculate end-to-end loss budgets per TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, and change orders accurately and on time.
  • Use OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO testing tools to troubleshoot fiber optic networks end-to-end.
  • Identify and correct network-wide problems using OTDR testing.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing on various fiber types.
  • Conduct building entrance splices, maintenance splices, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficiency in terminating connectors for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Experience with Testing & Troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics preferred.
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) preferred.
  • Data Center installation, Mechanical & Fusion Splicing, and OSP/Confined Space Entry experience preferred.
  • Competence in using trade tools: screwdrivers, levels, snips, pliers, wrenches, cable strippers, punch tools, and crimp tools.
