About the position

Our client is seeking a Data Center Technician for a 6-month contract in Hillsboro, OR. This role is essential in providing physical touch data center and network support, which includes racking, stacking, and connecting server devices. The technician will be responsible for setting up, configuring, and supporting both internal and external networks, ensuring that all systems, applications, security, and network configurations are maintained effectively. The position requires the ability to troubleshoot network performance issues and develop disaster recovery plans, as well as recommend necessary upgrades and patches to enhance system performance. The technician will work closely with an onsite team to maintain the network environment, providing incident support by collaborating with remote Level 2/3 teams to resolve outages and fix issues. This includes the replacement of cabling or hardware components as needed. Daily responsibilities also involve participating in hardware rack and stack installations, managing cable installations, and ensuring proper labeling and scanning of installed devices. The technician will also handle equipment shipping and receiving, and provide escort services for vendors and technicians as required. Responsibilities

  • Responsible for onsite Physical Touch data center/Network Support, including rack and stack activities and cross connects.
  • Sets up, configures, and supports internal and/or external networks.
  • Develops and maintains all systems, applications, security, and network configurations.
  • Troubleshoots network performance issues and creates and maintains a disaster recovery plan.
  • Recommends upgrades, patches, and new applications and equipment.
  • Provides technical support and guidance to users.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of network communications.
  • Uses knowledge of LAN/WAN systems to help design and install internal and external networks.
  • Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.
  • Maintains network environment in support of physical touch (Smart Hands) support of incidents and requests.
  • Provides incident support by working with remote Level 2/3 teams to assist in resolving outages and fixing issues.
  • Provides service request support by working with remote Network Support Teams to install hardware or patch cables for new services.
  • Participates in hardware rack & stack installation of both network and server equipment, cable management, and installation of required fiber and copper patch leads.
  • Receives hardware shipments for data center equipment landings and validates purchase order accuracy.
  • Unboxes and recycles materials, moves equipment from dock to staging areas or to DC racks.
  • Installs or retrofits server racks, including rail and shelving installation, power and network cable installation, and cable management.
  • Scans and labels installed devices (network or server) and designates parts for spare part stock inventory.
  • Handles proper e-waste disposal and equipment shipping and receiving as needed.
  • Provides escort service for vendors/techs and works on request tasks from the Service Now ticket system.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of progressive experience in the specialty in lieu of every year of education.
  • 2+ years of experience in racking, stacking, connecting, and providing basic configuration support for networking or server devices.
  • Ability to withstand working in a hot enclosed environment for short periods (i.e., data center hot isles).
  • Able to perform work while on a ladder (use of ladders is required for top-of-rack installations).
  • Able to work independently as well as in teams of 3-4 and be flexible.
  • Able to lift 35 lbs. solo.
  • Willing to travel between buildings using personal car/foot.
  • May be required to walk/sit/stand/crawl/kneel for extended periods.
  • Excellent customer service skills and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Requires knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Excel, and Word primarily), and Windows 10.

Nice-to-haves

  • Higher education or degree or foreign equivalent required from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in structured network cabling (Copper: Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Connector Types - RJ45; Fiber: Multimode, Single Mode, Connector Types - ST, SC, LC).
  • Experience with WIFI hardware, including Wireless LAN Controllers and Wireless Access Points.
  • Networking knowledge including IP Addressing, Layer 2 VLAN, etc.
  • Experience in Ethernet Switching hardware (Chassis, Supervisor, Line Cards, Power Supplies, etc.).
  • Knowledge of transceiver types (SX, LX, SR, LR, etc.) and cable troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Fluke Testers for copper and fiber testing.
