About the position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is seeking a Data Center Technician to join our team in Chicago, IL. This role is pivotal in helping us build and operate our cloud services at significant scale, ensuring that our multi-tenant cloud environment runs smoothly and efficiently. As a Data Center Technician, you will be responsible for the hardware installation and configuration of enterprise servers and cabling infrastructure, as well as performing hardware break/fix replacements of field-replaceable units (FRUs). You will be involved in rack installations, which include positioning racks, cabling, powering up servers, and handing them off to internal provisioning teams. In this position, you will troubleshoot and resolve Telco connectivity issues and replace network switch equipment as necessary. You will work within a ticketing environment that is monitored by multiple internal Oracle Cloud service owners and teams, ensuring that all activities are documented and that standard operating procedures (SOPs) are built or modified as needed. Your responsibilities will also include structured cabling, labeling, and troubleshooting of fiber, copper, and telecom cables, as well as installing, fixing, and repairing system power supplies and cabling. You should be capable of executing small projects independently while collaborating with your manager on larger local projects. This role requires you to maintain asset inventory and update internal applications as needed, and you must be accessible via cell phone for onsite emergencies. Participation in training that aligns with corporate objectives is also expected to bridge skill gaps and learn new relevant technologies. You will be required to act within Service Level Agreements (SLA) on the tickets assigned to you in your area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, and troubleshoot hardware in data center racks without disturbing other hardware and critical infrastructure on site.
  • Maintain asset inventory and update internal applications as needed.
  • Be accessible via cell phone and willing to work on onsite emergencies as needed.
  • Participate and complete training that aligns with corporate objectives to bridge skill gaps and learn new relevant technologies.
  • Act within Service Level Agreements (SLA) on the tickets assigned to you in your space.
  • Document activities and build/modify SOPs as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Telco connectivity issues and replace network switch equipment.
  • Execute small projects independently and collaborate with management on larger projects.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of server/storage/network hardware.
  • Strong interest in learning new data center concepts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • 2+ years working in an IT environment.
  • Experience solving problems on servers, networking devices, and IT equipment.
  • Inventory management experience, including ordering, receiving, and shipping server parts.
  • Experience taking on-call shifts and responding to critical events as needed.
  • Experience raising issues to senior onsite staff and management as needed.
  • Knowledge of IT hardware concepts (RAID, SAN, SCIS, Linux/Unix, GRUB).
  • Knowledge of trunk infrastructure is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • 2-year or 4-year degree or 2+ years of experience in a related field.
  • 1 year+ experience in structured cabling (copper/fiber), testing of cables, and understanding cooling and electrical systems concepts inside the data center.
