About the position

The Data Center Technician position at Vminds Technologies Inc. is a long-term contract role based in various locations including Richmond, VA, and other cities. The primary focus of this role is to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic and cabling systems within data centers. The technician will be responsible for mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and hardware, as well as performing essential testing and troubleshooting tasks to maintain optimal network performance. This position requires a strong understanding of fiber optics, including the installation of various types of connectors and the ability to perform both mechanical and fusion splicing. The technician will also be expected to complete all necessary documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including timesheets and work orders. In addition to technical skills, the role demands a self-motivated individual who can work independently and as part of a team. The technician will need to provide onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and may be required to travel to various sites as needed. Physical demands include the ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and work in confined spaces. The technician must also possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members. Overall, this position plays a critical role in maintaining the infrastructure of data centers and ensuring that all systems operate efficiently and effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable using volt-ohmmeter.
  • Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable using a tone set.
  • Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of the on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed.
  • Test using an OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end and network-wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • Data center experience.
  • Proficiency with fiber splicing and cabling (Cat6, Cat5).
  • Ability to perform testing using volt-ohmmeter and OTDR.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and give oral presentations effectively.
  • Physical ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to see and distinguish different colors and read small print.
