About the position

The Data Center Technician at Luytens Technology Solutions LLC is responsible for a variety of tasks related to the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within data centers. This position requires a strong understanding of cabling and termination processes, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during installation or maintenance. The technician will be expected to mount and install racks, patch panels, and fiber optic hardware, ensuring that all installations meet the required standards for safety and performance. Additionally, the technician will perform testing on horizontal and riser cables, utilizing tools such as volt-ohmmeters and tone sets to troubleshoot any issues, including opens, crosses, shorts, and transposed pairs. The role also involves the installation of various types of connectors, including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. The technician will be responsible for terminating simplex and duplex jumper cords, as well as breakout and indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber. Accurate completion of paperwork, including timesheets and work orders, is essential to ensure proper documentation of all activities. In addition to installation and testing, the technician will provide onsite support after business hours as part of an on-call schedule and may be required to travel to various sites as needed. The technician must be self-motivated, professional, and capable of promoting the company culture and mission to all stakeholders. Physical requirements include the ability to work at heights, lift heavy objects, and work in confined spaces, while maintaining a positive and proactive approach to problem-solving and project improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform testing including continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Use volt-ohmmeter to troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on cables.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end to end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed.
  • Test using OTDR, Fluke & EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Experience in Testing & Troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • 3-5 years of experience in Fiber preferred.
  • Industry Certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI) preferred.
  • Data Center installation experience preferred.
  • Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience preferred.
  • Ability to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, tape measures, and crimp tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in data center environments.
  • Proficiency in using OTDR and other testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for fiber installation.
