About the position

The Data Center Technician role involves the installation, testing, and maintenance of fiber optic systems within a data center environment. This position requires hands-on technical skills, including cabling, termination, and troubleshooting of fiber optic connections. The technician will work both independently and as part of a team to ensure the efficient operation of data center infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cable using volt-ohmmeter.
  • Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end to end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Provide onsite support after business hours as part of the on-call schedule.
  • Travel to various sites as needed for work.
  • Test using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end and network wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Experience in testing and troubleshooting MMF and SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • 3-5 years of experience in Fiber preferred.
  • Industry Certifications (Corning/FOA/BICSI) preferred.
  • Data Center installation experience preferred.
  • Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience preferred.
  • Ability to use various trade tools including screwdrivers, pliers, and crimp tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with mechanical and fusion splicing.
  • Industry certifications such as Corning, FOA, or BICSI.
  • Data Center installation experience.
  • Experience in OSP / Confined Space Entry.
