About the position

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is at the forefront of research in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. As a Data Engineer 2, you will play a crucial role in supporting the mission of the Department of Energy's Biological and Environmental Research (DOE-BER) by collaborating with researchers to develop and apply advanced simulation techniques to address complex research problems. Your work will involve designing, building, deploying, and maintaining data pipelines and ETL workflows, ensuring the integrity and availability of data across various computing environments. In this position, you will be responsible for implementing and configuring third-party solutions, as well as participating in software engineering tasks using Python or other programming languages. You will engage in data migration and ingestion projects, working closely with users to create large-scale data processing systems and optimize data pipelines for scalability. Your proactive approach to data integrity, security, and scalability will be essential in troubleshooting potential challenges within the data platform. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will partner cross-functionally to enhance existing constructs and solve data engineering problems. Your contributions will directly impact the quality and effectiveness of the research conducted at PNNL, making this a vital position within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with researchers on data development and application of advanced simulation to research problems relevant to DOE-BER missions.
  • Design, build, deploy, and maintain data pipelines and ETL workflows.
  • Implement and configure third-party solutions, participating in software engineering work in Python or other programming languages.
  • Work on data migrations and ingestion projects, designing large-scale data processing systems.
  • Develop data pipelines optimized for scaling and troubleshoot potential data platform challenges.
  • Ensure quality, availability, and integrity of data and respective systems, integrating proactive strategies regarding data integrity, security, and scalability.
  • Partner cross-functionally to build and improve new/existing constructs and solve data engineering problems.

Requirements

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience, or MS/MA, or PhD.
  • Experience with ETL, SQL, NoSQL, and Data Management frameworks.
  • Proficiency in backend languages and tools such as Python and PostgreSQL.
  • Hands-on experience with any commercial Lab Information Management System (LIMS).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data management frameworks.
  • Familiarity with additional backend programming languages and tools.
