About the position

The Digital Modernization Group at Leidos is seeking a Data Engineer/Analyst intern to support the Global Solutions Management - Operations II (GSM-O II) contract. This contract is focused on the Operations, Sustainment, Maintenance, Repair, and Defense of the Defense Information System Network (DISN) within the Department of Defense Information Network (DODIN), in collaboration with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). The position is based at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, and requires onsite support. Leidos is a prominent defense, intelligence, homeland security, and advanced technology company, and the GSM-O program is dedicated to providing worldwide Defense Information System Network services to the Department of Defense and national security organizations. As a Data Engineer/Analyst intern, you will be part of the Operational Engineering team, which is looking for motivated and capable candidates to assist in software development and network operations/engineering functions. The role involves creating visualizations and dashboards using Kibana and React, assisting with the deployment and maintenance of Kafka and Elastic clusters, and collaborating with an Agile team. You will also troubleshoot and resolve various technical issues, proactively identify and mitigate risks, and communicate effectively with team members to ensure project objectives are met. There may also be opportunities to design, develop, document, test, and deploy software using Python, JavaScript, Java, and SQL.

Responsibilities

  • Create Kibana visualizations and dashboards using React to provide information to users and support staff.
  • Assist with the deployment, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, updates/upgrades of Kafka and Elastic clusters and environments.
  • Work with an Agile team, attend scrums and demonstrate working software while collaborating with a geographically distributed team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation, infrastructure and system issues.
  • Proactively and independently identify, report, monitor, and mitigate technical risks.
  • Frequently communicate and collaborate with other team members to ensure successful completion of project objectives.
  • Design, develop, document, test and deploy software written in Python, JavaScript, Java and SQL.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's-granting program from an accredited college/university in a relevant discipline is required for consideration.
  • Knowledge of SQL server and the creation of web-based tools.
  • Software development experience with Python, Java, and SQL. Working knowledge of HTML and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of distributed version control software such as Git and Bitbucket.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts of Software Engineering.
  • Strong communication skills that enable proactive and effective collaboration with a virtual team.
  • Ability to obtain interim Secret DoD Security clearance prior to start date (selected candidates will be sponsored for required clearance).
  • Must be a US Citizen to qualify.
  • Local colleges nearby Scott AFB Illinois (St Louis Metro area) need only apply.
  • Work must be performed on Scott AFB Illinois.
  • Must have own transportation to enter Scott AFB Illinois.
  • Ability to obtain Security+ certification or equivalent DoD 8570 IAT II certification.
  • Candidates must not have graduated prior to May 2025 and must be actively enrolled in a degree plan that extends into fall 2025.

Nice-to-haves

  • Web development experience, specifically using HTML, JavaScript and UI frameworks such as React.
  • Experience working remotely with a geographically dispersed team.
  • Full software lifecycle experience (design, development, test, deployment), including deployment to a production environment.
  • Experience developing software in a containerized environment with Kubernetes and/or Docker.
  • Experience designing, building and deploying DevOps pipelines with Bitbucket, Git, Jenkins, Artifactory and Ansible (or equivalent tools).
  • Experience developing software on a UNIX command line platform.
  • Experience designing, developing and deploying software in a cloud environment (AWS is a plus).
  • Experience with Atlassian tools, including JIRA and Confluence.
