About the position

The San Diego Padres are seeking a Data Engineer to design, develop, and maintain large data pipelines that support various baseball operations, including Front Office, Scouting, Player Development, and Major League Operations. The role aims to enhance the team's performance on the field by ensuring data reliability and accessibility.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in building and maintaining the internal data model of play-by-play and player-tracking data.
  • Transform data to ensure reliability, cleanliness, and accessibility for developers and analysts.
  • Develop auditing SQL queries and quality-check systems for data integrity.
  • Construct and maintain data pipelines that integrate external baseball information into the internal system.
  • Innovate solutions to optimize data processes for improved performance and scalability.

Requirements

  • Experience designing and building professional databases and data warehouses.
  • Knowledge of database architecture, design patterns, and best practices for system performance and maintainability.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and understanding of query intricacies.
  • Experience with code versioning management systems like Git.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for analyzing and debugging software issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical users to understand their needs and propose solutions.
  • Proficient in MS Office products and general office equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a collaborative work ethic.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills to handle detailed work and manage projects under deadlines.
  • Professional demeanor with discretion, integrity, and accountability.
  • Consistent, punctual, and reliable attendance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience with AWS cloud services like Redshift, Glue, RDS (or Azure/GCP equivalents).
  • Proven proficiency in Python for data manipulation.
  • Familiarity with Apache Spark.
  • Passion for baseball and understanding of baseball statistics and analytics.
