About the position

The Data Engineer (Biomedical & Clinical Informatics) position at Rutgers University involves supporting the biomedical research community by managing and analyzing data related to molecular and cellular biology, genomics, and biomedicine. The role requires collaboration with research scientists and the development of data pipelines and tools to facilitate research computing. The incumbent will also engage in outreach to identify new users of research computing resources and provide training and support to the university community.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of new biomedical and clinical informatics research and support models.
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines for clinical research data integration and analysis.
  • Utilize data wrangling techniques to clean and prepare raw data for analysis.
  • Facilitate involvement of other biomedical and clinical informatics activities in research projects.
  • Provide education, outreach, and training to the university community.
  • Develop and coordinate instructor-based training focused on advanced computing.
  • Optimize data systems for performance and efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Infrastructure teams to align data engineering efforts with broader strategies.
  • Participate in professional development activities and present at national meetings.
  • Develop and expand partnerships to promote advanced computing-related collaborations.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required plus a minimum of six years' experience in computationally intensive or data-intensive research projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in data pipeline building, optimization, and data system architecture in a healthcare or clinical research environment.
  • Expertise in data wrangling techniques, ETL processes, and staging data for analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, and Java, and experience with database technologies like SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
  • Deep knowledge of statistical methods and practical knowledge of machine learning model building and deployment.

Nice-to-haves

  • A Ph.D. in a related field.
  • Knowledge of the EPIC electronic medical records system and the EPIC Cognitive Computing Platform (ECCP).
  • Familiarity with data-intensive computing environments and cloud-based data technologies.
  • Experience with statistical tools like SAS, Stata, and SPSS.
  • Knowledge of HPC systems.
