About the position

The Data Engineer role is a direct hire position based in Byron Center, Michigan, focusing on the creation, integration, implementation, and support of large, highly complex systems and applications. This position requires an individual who can operate independently under limited direction, providing expert-level technical design and development services for one or more systems or specialized applications. The Data Engineer will be responsible for providing technical leadership on complex solutions, defining and documenting project scope and objectives, and enhancing systems and applications to solve complex problems while meeting business objectives. In this role, the Data Engineer will prepare detailed functional specifications and possess full technical knowledge of all phases of analysis, integration, development, quality assurance, and implementation procedures. The individual may be responsible for multiple phases of a project, ensuring that all aspects are executed efficiently. Troubleshooting is a key component of this position, as the Data Engineer will interface with various corporate areas to provide detailed application/system information to assist with problem determination and resolution. Additionally, the Data Engineer will act as a business liaison and mentor, interacting with business users to provide detailed application/system information and guidance. This role also involves maintaining an efficient infrastructure by recognizing and reducing latencies and gaining efficiencies where necessary. Participation in the on-call support rotation is expected, ensuring that the systems remain operational and any issues are addressed promptly.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a reference resource providing expert level technical design and development services for systems or specialized applications.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex solutions, defining and documenting project/system/function scope and objectives.
  • Design or enhance systems, applications, functions, and procedures to solve complex problems and meet business objectives.
  • Prepare detailed functional specifications and possess full technical knowledge of all phases of analysis, integration, development, quality assurance, and implementation procedures.
  • Interface with appropriate corporate areas to provide detailed application/system information for problem determination and resolution.
  • Act as a primary business liaison, interacting with users to provide detailed application/system information.
  • Mentor and provide guidance and training to other development associates.
  • Maintain an efficient infrastructure by recognizing and reducing latencies and gaining efficiencies where needed.
  • Participate in the on-call support rotation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Minimum 3+ years of work experience in Business Intelligence, Relational Databases, and ETL processes with modern ETL/ELT tools (Talend, Matillion, DataStage, Informatica) preferably in a cloud environment.
  • Experience with Cloud Databases (Snowflake preferred) and Big Data technologies is a bonus.
  • Experience with Qlik Replicate/Qlik Compose is preferred.
  • Advanced SQL skills, able to write and optimize complex queries in multiple database platforms (DB2, Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, MySQL, Netezza, Snowflake).
  • Experience with Unix scripting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and effective interpersonal skills to work with internal and external customers and vendors.
  • Good analytical/research and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with additional cloud database technologies beyond Snowflake.
  • Familiarity with other ETL tools not mentioned in the requirements.
