About the position

The Data Engineer position at KDI focuses on developing and maintaining data pipelines, including ETL and reporting workflows, to support research activities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This role involves collaboration with research teams to understand data needs and deliver high-scale data solutions in healthcare and life sciences, contributing to impactful research and development programs.

Responsibilities

  • Developing high-scale, robust data warehouses and data lakes for healthcare and life sciences.
  • Working with research teams to understand data needs and providing domain expertise on data models and query optimizations.
  • Designing, building, and launching new data marts for national research programs and ETL processes.
  • Designing and developing architectures for data intake, curation, organization, and dissemination.
  • Researching and evaluating state-of-the-art data management technologies.
  • Collaborating with scientists and engineers to produce reliable data products and systems.
  • Aligning behaviors and priorities with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Requirements

  • A BS in computer science, information technology, mathematics, engineering, or a related field of study and 2-4 years of aligned experience.
  • 2 or more years of proven experience in database design and/or development.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS or Doctorate in computer science, information technology, mathematics, engineering, or a related field of study.
  • At least 2 years of experience in basic and advanced SQL, database programming, and scripting languages (Python preferred).
  • Experience with data warehousing systems and data-driven software development.
  • Solid understanding of database system administration.
  • Expertise with OLTP and data warehousing, preferably SQL Server.
  • Experience in designing analytics data systems and working with Big Data processing frameworks such as Spark, Dask, and Pandas.
  • Experience with healthcare informatics and AI/ML data requirements.
