About the position

The Data Engineer role at The Hartford is focused on supporting the Actuarial Information Services team, which plays a critical role in regulatory reporting, reserving, and other essential functions. This position requires a strong foundation in data management and engineering, with an emphasis on process automation and efficient solutions to maximize business value. The role involves collaboration with various internal departments and external entities, ensuring timely and accurate data delivery to the Financial Controllers team. The work environment is hybrid, requiring in-office presence three days a week in Hartford, CT.

Responsibilities

  • Work with business partners to modify/enhance/troubleshoot reserving applications to meet Financial Controllers team requirements.
  • Architect innovative solutions to advance reserving capabilities while delivering timely results to business partners.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize processes by creatively using available data/tools and reducing system complexities.
  • Solve problems efficiently by understanding desired outcomes, assessing root causes, and producing viable solutions.
  • Proactively assess technical issues and risks that could impact system performance and clarity.
  • Use Toad for Oracle to connect to multiple Oracle databases and access necessary datasets.
  • Manage day-to-day research or project work.
  • Leverage Agile methodology to work iteratively with business partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience programming with PL/SQL in a business setting required.
  • Experience with T-SQL in a business setting required.
  • Demonstrated history of manipulating and extracting information from various data structures and databases required.
  • Some experience with Linux script and file management is a plus.
  • Demonstrated passion for learning new skills, both technical and business-related.
  • Ability to articulate and train technical concepts regarding data management to non-technical business partners.
  • Detail and results-driven with a commitment to managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of independence and self-direction, while also being a team player.
