About the position

Travelers is a leading property casualty insurer with a commitment to taking care of our customers, communities, and each other. As part of our Data Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in constructing pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data across the enterprise. This position is integral to growing and transforming our analytics landscape, where you will leverage your analytical skills and inquisitive nature to translate the stories found in data. You will design, build, and deploy data solutions that capture, explore, transform, and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and business intelligence/insights. In this role, you will be part of the Bond and Specialty Insurance's Business Intelligence and Analytics Strategic Data group, working within a high-performing Agile team. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver and maintain a Foundational Data Warehouse for our Actuaries, Research group, and reporting teams. Our division is embarking on a multi-year initiative to migrate to a Cloud-based rate, quote, and issue system, seamlessly merging our legacy on-premise warehouse with the new Cloud data to provide access on both platforms for our user base. You will analyze sources to determine their value and recommend data to include in analytical processes. Collaborating with Development and QA partners, you will build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing and quality solutions. Your expertise will provide significant business value, and you will educate end users on data products and the analytic environment. Additionally, you will perform data analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of moderate complexity, incorporating core data management competencies such as data governance, data security, and data quality.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze sources to determine value and recommend data to include in analytical processes.
  • Work with Development and QA partners to build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing/quality solutions.
  • Build valuable subject matter expertise that is leveraged to provide significant business value.
  • Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products/analytic environment.
  • Perform data analysis, assessment and resolution for defects and incidents of moderate complexity and correct as appropriate.
  • Incorporate core data management competencies including data governance, data security and data quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
  • Six years of related data analysis experience working with relational and dimensional data.
  • Proficient use of tools, techniques, and manipulation including Cloud platforms, programming languages, and an understanding of software engineering practices.
  • Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to achieve commitments, decompose work assignments into small batch releases, and contribute to tradeoff and negotiation discussions.
  • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to understand technical concepts and possess in-depth knowledge of immediate systems worked on.
  • Proven problem-solving skills including debugging skills, allowing you to determine the source of data issues in unfamiliar code or systems and the ability to recognize and solve repetitive problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact with team members and business partners.
  • Intermediate leadership skills with a proven track record of self-motivation in identifying personal growth opportunities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data governance and data quality frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices.
