About the position

The Data Engineer I at American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, troubleshooting, optimizing, and maintaining enterprise-level data pipelines. This role focuses on creating robust solutions that meet both business and technical requirements, leveraging SQL and various tools to manage data effectively. The position requires collaboration with business analysts and solution architects to ensure the successful conversion of pipeline designs into development activities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, implement, troubleshoot, optimize, and maintain enterprise-level data pipelines.
  • Analyze data transformation requirements to build and refine data pipeline architecture patterns.
  • Utilize SQL and other tools to implement maintainable solutions that meet business and technical requirements.
  • Develop data extracts, applications, and ad-hoc queries as needed.
  • Create SQL queries to access tabular structures in RDBMS.
  • Transform functional specifications into technical specifications and source to target mappings.
  • Communicate effectively with Business Analysts, Data Modelers, and Solution Architects.
  • Document data pipeline processes thoroughly, including migration steps between environments.
  • Perform unit and integration testing activities and assist in user acceptance testing as needed.
  • Work with a mentor to enhance knowledge of data management and pipelining principles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Information Management, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • General knowledge of ETL and data movement.
  • Basic understanding of SQL scripting and/or another programming language.
  • Base knowledge of RDBMS and data warehouse tools including SQL Server and Snowflake.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with various data frameworks.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees, customers, and third parties.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of basic data transformations in a hybrid cloud environment.
