About the position

As a Data Engineer II within the Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A) organization at Travelers Insurance, you will be an integral part of a collaborative team dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that enhance our analytics landscape. This role requires a strong analytical mindset and an inquisitive attitude, enabling you to translate complex data into actionable insights. You will be responsible for designing, building, and deploying data solutions that capture, explore, transform, and utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and business intelligence initiatives. Your contributions will help shape the future of data-driven decision-making within the company. In this position, you will build and operationalize complex data solutions, troubleshoot issues, and recommend data cleansing and quality solutions. You will analyze various data sources to determine their value and recommend which data should be included in analytical processes. A key aspect of your role will involve incorporating core data management competencies, including data governance, data security, and data quality, into your work. Collaboration is essential, as you will work closely with teams across the organization to support the delivery of data products and educate end users on the analytic environment. You will also perform data and system analysis, assess and resolve defects and incidents of moderate complexity, and test data movement and transformation code. Your ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace will be crucial, as you will break down work assignments into manageable batches and engage in discussions about trade-offs and negotiations. The ideal candidate will have domain expertise in the stages of model development, including design, training, validation, deployment, and monitoring, and will possess proven problem-solving skills to debug and resolve issues in unfamiliar code or systems.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operationalize complex data solutions, troubleshoot problems, and recommend data cleansing/quality solutions.
  • Design data solutions that support AI and ML initiatives.
  • Analyze data sources to determine their value and recommend data for analytical processes.
  • Incorporate data management competencies including data governance, data security, and data quality.
  • Collaborate with teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
  • Perform data and system analysis, assess and resolve defects and incidents of moderate complexity.
  • Test data movement, transformation code, and data components.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM-related field or equivalent training with data tools, techniques, and manipulation.
  • Eight years of related experience in data engineering or equivalent roles.
  • Experience designing data solutions, including curating datasets for supporting GPT, large language models, and NLP models like BERT and transformers.
  • Proficiency with key Data Engineering tools including Python, Cloud Platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and GitHub actions.
  • Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace and contribute to trade-off and negotiation discussions.
  • Domain expertise in model development stages including design, training, validation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including debugging skills to identify issues in unfamiliar code or systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members and business partners.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data governance frameworks and best practices.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Knowledge of additional programming languages such as Java or Scala.
