About the position

As a Data Engineer II within the Enterprise Data & Analytics (ED&A) organization at Travelers, you will be part of a highly collaborative team dedicated to delivering modern solutions that enhance our analytics landscape. This role is pivotal in growing and transforming how we utilize data to support Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and business intelligence initiatives. You will leverage your analytical skills and inquisitive nature to translate complex data into actionable insights, employing a variety of data programming techniques. Your responsibilities will include designing, building, and deploying data solutions that effectively capture, explore, transform, and utilize data to meet business needs. In this position, you will build and operationalize complex data solutions, troubleshoot issues, apply necessary transformations, and recommend data cleansing and quality solutions. You will analyze various data sources to determine their value and recommend which data should be included in analytical processes. Your role will also involve incorporating core data management competencies such as data governance, security, and quality into your work. Collaboration is key, as you will work within and across teams to support the delivery of data products and educate end users about the analytic environment. Additionally, you will perform data and system analysis, assess and resolve defects and incidents of moderate complexity, and test data movement, transformation code, and data components. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering high-quality results in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing/quality solutions.
  • Design data solutions that support AI and ML initiatives.
  • Analyze data sources to determine their value and recommend data for analytical processes.
  • Incorporate data governance, security, and quality into data management practices.
  • Collaborate with teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
  • Perform data and system analysis, assessment, and resolution for defects and incidents of moderate complexity.
  • Test data movement, transformation code, and data components.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM-related field or equivalent training.
  • Eight years of related experience in data engineering or equivalent roles.
  • Experience designing data solutions, including curating datasets for AI and ML models.
  • Proficiency with key Data Engineering tools such as Python, Cloud Platforms, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and GitHub actions.
  • Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace and contribute to tradeoff and negotiation discussions.
  • Domain expertise in model development stages including design, training, validation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, including debugging skills for unfamiliar code or systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with large language models and NLP models like BERT and transformers.
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks and best practices.
  • Knowledge of data quality assessment techniques.
