About the position

The Data Engineer II plays a crucial role within Dataworks, focusing on delivering engineering innovation and executing key business initiatives. This position acts as a "universal translator" between IT, business, software engineers, and data scientists, facilitating collaboration among these multi-disciplinary teams. The Data Engineer II is responsible for adhering to technical standards for data engineering, including the selection and refinement of foundational technical components. The role involves working on aspects of the Dataworks platform that govern the ingestion, transformation, and pipelining of data assets, catering to both end users within FedEx and external data products and services. On a day-to-day basis, the Data Engineer II will be deeply involved in code development and medium-scale deployments. Under general supervision, the engineer supports the design, build, test, and maintenance of data pipelines at a big data scale. This includes updating data from multiple sources, batch processing of collected data, and ensuring that the data is formatted correctly for storage and analysis. The engineer will also assist in optimizing the ecosystem and pipeline, troubleshooting performance issues, and providing L3 support. The role requires a deep understanding of both the business and technical problems that Dataworks aims to solve, as well as building tools, platforms, and pipelines that enable teams to analyze data effectively, build models, and drive decisions. The Data Engineer II is expected to scale up from "laptop-scale" to "cluster scale" problems, delivering tangible value rapidly while collaborating with diverse teams. Following best practices for future reuse in the form of accessible, reusable patterns, templates, and code bases is essential. The engineer will interact with peer technologists from the broader enterprise and external partners to create synergies and ensure smooth deployments to downstream operational systems.
