About the position

The Data Engineer position at FirstEnergy involves working within the Data Management team to design, develop, and enhance Data Warehousing and Analytics applications. The role requires collaboration with business resources to make technological choices and architect the necessary applications, focusing on data architecture, engineering, analysis, and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct requirements analysis with business teams to gather functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Maintain data warehousing platforms including MemSQL/SingleStore, Teradata, and legacy Oracle Data Marts.
  • Architect applications by decomposing them into components and making technological choices considering availability, recovery, security, performance, and governance.
  • Define and document logical and physical data models for Data Lakes and Data Warehousing.
  • Identify source systems and data elements, and build extraction functions for change data capture.
  • Document data transformations and ensure maintainability, security, and performance in designs.
  • Create physical data models and implement data extraction functions and transformation logic.
  • Develop prototypes and support complex logic development for business goals.
  • Communicate design and logic to business users, explaining data models and ETL processes.
  • Foster a culture of sharing, re-use, and operational efficiency in data solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline such as Computer Science or related field.
  • 5 years of related experience in data engineering or similar roles.
  • Working knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies, RDBMS, and ETL processes.
  • Experience with development and tuning on RDBMS technology including Teradata, SingleStore, Oracle, or SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of ETL process development using tools like PowerCenter or Informatica Data Replication.
  • Experience in creating and documenting ER and Dimensional models, preferably with ERWIN.
  • Familiarity with the Kimball methodology for designing Enterprise Data Warehouses and Data Marts.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan activities, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to mentor less experienced personnel and support team members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data science techniques and workflows.
  • Familiarity with Azure Synapse Notebooks/Pipelines.
